Onassis Air / Open studios / Athens, 2023

At the Open Day #5 for Onassis AiR residents, held at the Onassis Foundation in Athens, I presented a film-in-progress titled To Welcome a Toadfish. The work emerges from a research trip to Crete, where I engaged with local fishing communities and marine scientists to trace the symbolic presence of the toxic pufferfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus) in the Mediterranean Sea. Blending documentary fragments with science fiction footage, the film draws on Japanese Kaiju cinema—particularly Godzilla—as a way to explore how certain species are mythologized, alienated, or cast as monstrous. To Welcome a Toadfish reflects on narratives of invasion and otherness, asking what it means to welcome the unfamiliar in a time of ecological and cultural flux.
